When dogs in shelters don’t have the opportunity to exercise, they can’t get out their energy. Because of this they’re more likely to act erratic and pent-up. These ‘energetic’ dogs are seen as less adoptable. If they could work off that energy, it would help their chances of finding their forever home. So we brought in the perfect people to help.

We asked the Huntley High School Cross-Country team to visit their local shelter, Animal House Shelter in Huntley, Illinois each week over the summer to take the most energetic dogs on a run. The difference it made was immediate. Dogs that were being passed over time and time again were not finding their forever home. One girl became known as “the good luck charm” after every dog she took on a run was adopted within a week. One dog was spotted in the middle of the run and was adopted that same day.

And it wasn’t just the dogs that were changed by the experience. The weekly ritual brought the team closer and helped even the most timid students find their place on the team.

The numbers speak for themselves – every dog in the program was adopted. 28 in total!

K9s for Warriors rescues shelter dogs and trains them to be service animals for veterans living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

It’s a real win-win if there ever was such a thing.

The vets get to live their lives again, and the dogs get a reprieve and a home and a purpose for life
